Well...I haven't updated since that long post.

This post is dedicated to Ji Xu and Wei Sum, who are taking their O' Level English examinations on Monday. First of all, all the best to them. Today's post tries to list out some pointers in their Paper 1, so it may be of help...or it may not. Besides, I'm too rusty anyways.

Writing that one-word-essay would probably be the safest bet because you get to choose your own theme and points. However before beginning, it would be useful if you have already thought of the ending of the essay (e.g how to topic affects teenagers, how the topic affects Singapore whereas less than that in another country, why preventing/promoting the topic is beneficial to society) so that when you work backwards, you are actually writing your thoughts and points on the topic and how they would lead to that ending. It's very much similar to blogging, you don't say what you don't feel like when you blog, right?

You can "settle" a few paragraphs of content by writing

a) What does _____ mean to you?
b) How do you define ____ in your life/lifestyle (e.g smoking).
c) What is the current situation of ____ in Singapore, what factors over time have caused this effect and what are the after-complications after a person experiences ____ (you can narrow the scope by focusing on say...teenagers rather than Singaporeans/a nation of people)
d) How would that situation would be different if it happened in a generation or era before ours.

Of course whatever content you would like to add just write it in.

At this point, you may think of including your personal experience into the content body. But if you have followed this skeleton of writing, it would not be recommended. I usually write expository-styled essays during my time, so my content appears to be explaining, factual and neutral from all angles. A personal experience would "force" the marker to assume you have a bias towards the topic and questions your judgment in your writing. But if you feel it can help support your explanation of the topic, you may include it in.

There are quite a few risky tips you can try. You can include imaginary statistics like, "In Secondary Schools, probably 37% of the students have chosen a co-curricular activity that they have little or no interest in." or "Singlish is probably the best proof of racial harmony, a feat that 80% of the world today are trying to achieve.". But as mentioned, they are risky attempts and if you are unsure, you can leave this idea alone.

If you have done any constant reading, grammar and spelling should not be of any problem as they mainly use the same skeleton. Look up the dictionary for 3-4 chim words and remember their meaning and usage and try to use them if these words can support your essay. If you are unsure about your grammar, try saying to yourself what you have just written in a British accent and listen if it sounds correct or if the line were written as a subtitle in a Chinese show, would it fit correctly? (English subtitles are 99% correct)

Lastly, read a newspaper article on current affairs before going in and try to link what happened in the article with the topic. Most of the time they should have some sort of connection.

Oh and by the way, if you want to write something that puts yourself in an imaginary situation, the correct form is

"If I [were] ..."

and not

"If I [was] ... "

WOW!

After being afb (away-from-blog) for more that 3 months and some encouragement by Wei Sum, here's an update of my lame life

JUNE
------

We celebrated Jixu, Liying and ZongYi's birthdays. Jixu and Liying's were a bit too simple with just a mango cake. But the highlight was Jixu receving a diamond necklace from SK Jewellery, courtesy of the class ... not bad hor?

Next, the class went to The Cathay to watch Blood: The Last Vampire, which is sort of a 2-star rendition of the Anime series. Most of the "blood" was CGI so it was quite anticlimax at some of the girls that were afraid of the gore before going into the theatre. But in the end, it was quite enjoyable.

Not really something worth your time in the cinema, just download it.

After that, we went to Fish & Co to celebrate ZongYi's birthday. The crew cheered loudly for the man on the chair. And when the restaurant looked over to ZongYi, his expression was priceless. After dinner, the girls retired. But us guys went on a Lord-of-the-Rings style journey to continue nightlife. In the end, we settled at The Actors' Bar, which basically sucked. HAHA!

JULY
------

Miss Tay's birthday was probably celebrated and recognized by almost a decade of students. And even till to day, after marrying Mr Gui for more that 2 years, we'd still call her Miss Tay and it sort of became like a name for a friend rather than an addressee to a teacher. That's so cool!

On July 14, I had my birthday celebrated, which was VERY weird because the last time I celebrated my birthday was like 6 years ago. Anyways, thanks for the cake and the board once again.

July marked the start of my movies marathon. Downloading (yes µTorrent-ly) movies that I wanted to watch in the past but didn't have time or ppl to accompany with. Currently, the list includes

- おくりびと (Okuribito) - this is a must-watch for me. The Oscar-award winning movie that is set to touch the hearts of millions. It's great to see Japan's influence back in the video scene, Korean dramas are just quite crap, but it may be just me.
- 28 Weeks Later
- Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Uncut
- War of the Worlds
- Ip Man (actually while typing this I've already watched this, the movie was GREAT!)
- Hellsing OVA 6
- all of Hyori Lee's videos (HAHA!)

AUGUST
----------

August meant the kick start of the Premier League season. After undergoing drastic changes in the squads of big teams, the face of football was tossed again into the Russian Roulette. Hope Arsenal can win the league this season. Van Persie has been the Bergkamp in Arsenal's movement and having been involved in 7 goals and not getting one for himself is really quite suey. Hope he finds his luck soon.

And of course the biggest thing in August for Singapore is definitely ... ... Qinci's birthday! That's right, it's on 9th August too. But I didn't have the chance to celebrate with her because she spent the day in Malaysia with her relatives. Too bad, next year then.

Wlau why you go M'sia???

Approaching the end of the month was the infamous exam period. After going through more than 10 years of tests and examinations, I can no longer motivate myself to be as enthusiastic as I used to for the sake of study. In addition to that, there was a sick report worth 20% of overall marks for AT-RE (a module of mine) that we had to rush through in just 1 week AND study for the examinations.

In the end, I channeled my energy into the report (WRONG MOVE!) and neglected studying for the exam. Yes, I paid the price. In the end, I have a huge feeling that I've flunked my Mech III (another module of mine). Pray for moderation...lol! But the other exams seem handle-able, and with other factors like practicals + tutorials, it may not be a lost cause. But...enough of exam talk, we are now in the season of vacations!

SEPTEMBER
--------------

Woot...zoomed through the time-line and we've finally reached the present. By now, everyone's ecstatic about the end of exams and vacations undergoing. Unfortunately, FYP still lurks very prominently in our to-do-list and we have to make trips back to SP in almost everyday. Jon's holidays is basically chewed up by a 3-month attachment (WTH 3 months?!) and Wei Lun is waiting for posting after completing his BMT just a week ago. In short, we got Punk'd.

But being the Singaporeans that we are, we still can find time to enjoy the holidays. I mean, we still splurge on food even with the economy and all, right?

On 10 September, we went to celebrate Boon Tat's birthday, which actually happens on the 11th. After a vigorous voting period, Boon Tat decided Jack's Place in The Hereen. When our meals were done, the girls ordered a birthday cake for Boon Tat. Thanks for making my job easier =D.

And what have the holidays installed for me? Well, FYP is the frontrunner for highest in priority because SPINNOVEX (a technology convention by SP) evaluation is just around the corner.

On the flip side, other than the movies waiting for me to watch them, I've also amassed a number of games, mainly PC, to play as well as to give my 2 cents in my review. In the meantime, I've also started learning Tennis from Boon Tat and Zongyi but I've got the feeling they are not that interested in teaching me...but it may be just me again. Football has always been in my mind, hope Ken-they-all or ZongYi-they-all can find time to jio us to play agin... and that it doesn't rain!

If I have the time, I may upload a groundmove video of me soon probably here on this blog or on Facebook. Keep an eye out for that!

In recent weeks Arsenal have been going through a bad patch of the season (this early?!) losing 2-1 away to Manchester United -.- and then 4-2 away to Manchester City. Fuck Adebayor for being a big-ass, ungrateful jerk! On a positive note, Rosicky is back in the team and his influence is quite phenomenal. YAY!

These few days the internet has been a complete disaster. I started this post on 10 September and it's taking me 5 days to finish. Pages aren't loading as they should be and javascripts just end in void, which basically means I can't upload pictures. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. Lastly, over the course of these 4 months being afb, I've gotten to know 2 incredible and legendary musicians through blindly-surfing YouTube.

1) Bobby Mcferrin -- A masterclass musician who specializes in the Acapella, Jazz & Classical genres. His rendition of the Ave Maria by Bach/Gounod is angelic. His concerts have never been planned, unlike most artistes who think of a schedule of what to do during a concert. So that means every musical act was though on the spot and unique, of course he had recycled some. The best thing about Mcferrin is that he IMPROVISES with accomplished artistes such as Richard Bona and Yo Yo Ma (you can look up on these 2 too), creating unrecorded music inventions on the spot. To improvise means to create and compliment, in this case music, with the partner(s) without any prior planning or rehearsal. To do that would need a immense amount to talent, knowledge and creativity. Ironically he doesn't know how to play any instuments or rather, the only instrument he know is his voice.

2) KRS-One -- An acronym meaning Knowledge-Reign-Supreme-Over-Nearly-Everyone. KRS-One has been recognized as a founding member and one of the last Hip-Hop masters of our generation on Earth today. Hip-Hop is barely 50 years old and with lame yet uprising rappers like Lil' Wayne and Soulja Boy making T-R-A-S-H rap, which is by the way absolute garbage, it is presumed that Hip-Hop is dead, as said by Nas. In today's music, Hip-Hop is usually associated with Rap but the Rap music we keep hearing is always about niggas, hoes, guns, having stacks of cash and lyrics that either don't make sense or basically just bragging about their "success". Not to mention corporations that puppeteer these rappers just to make more money out of the mainstream music. KRS-One's take on Hip-Hop goes way back to when he first started out in 1973 in South Bronx in the USA. Intellectual, sick beats, lyrics that rhyme, old-school, and very prophetic, it's no wonder everyone calls him The Teacha. Listening to KRS-One raises your intellect, trust me on that. He is the embodiment of Hip-Hop!

Many people do NOT think much when they read blogs. So this post will make you (yeah YOU!) think quite abit. Don't worry, no gears will fall out of their place. Guess the rest of the 90% of the content while I post 10% only. There is no right or wrong answer, because everything comes from your mind.

...We live in a world where air-conditioning is not a privilege, but a necessity. Isn't this transition a little too ...

...maybe I should try Tennis for a change, or rock-climbing...

... Shouldn't we focus more on the fact that we can enjoy our time together as a class rather than the money involved?...
